Pancake Breakfast/Fly-in
On May 29, the skies of New
Philadelphia will be filled (weather

attending our next Fly-in Event at Harry
Clever Field. Breakfast will be served

Successful Safety Seminar
On Wednesday, March 16,
2005, local pilots and aviation
enthusiasts were treated to a
discussion sponsored by Kent
State University, Tuscarawas,
and your local Chapter
#1077. Chris Palcho and
Robert Haake were the guest
speakers provided by the FAA
Safety Seminar Program.
Topics covered were Pilot
Performed Maintenance and
the latest information about
the new Sport Pilot License.
Before the topics were
presented, a DVD of Chapter
member Mark Dusenberry
flying his 1905 Wright Flyer was
shown to a very appreciative
audience. A spirited
discussion about the merits
and drawbacks of the new
Sport License concluded the
meeting. During the final
stages of the program, Chris
Palcho threw out a question
to the audience asking what
more the FAA could do for
General Aviation pilots.
Several individuals suggested that an
additive be formulated to allow older
aircraft requiring 80 octane fuel to
function more effectively on 100LL.
Several people should be mentioned as
being important to bringing the Safety
Seminar program to our local airport. In
particular, Don Zimmerman, Chris Palcho,
and Terry Henry were most instrumental in
making this event happen. We would
especially like to thank Sporty’s Aviation
for donations of Aviation DVDs.
FAA Wings Program
Pilots need to be aware that the FAA is
offering a program for pilots encouraging
them to continue to upgrade their skills.
Pilots can earn their “wings” by attending
a Safety Seminar such as the one recently
held at Kent State University, Tuscarawas,
and schedule to fly three one hour lessons
with an instructor of their choice. Wings
cards are available at all Safety Seminars
and need to be signed by one of the
presenters.
Up close and Personal
Last October while the Ohio Valley RV8tors
were celebrating their first anniversary at
Harry Clever, I had the opportunity to
achieve a lifelong dream by getting a ride
with Gary Slutz in his RV4 and flying
formation with John Furey and another
pilot whose name I have forgotten, but
who goes by the nickname of Wolfman. It
is a whole different perspective when in a
60-degree, 2 ½ G turn with other aircraft
just a few feet away. I heartily
recommend formation flying as an
experience not to be passed upon if
given the opportunity.
